Choosing a wedding florist
Flowers are a key feature of a wedding, and they add beauty and colour to your celebration, so it’s important to choose the right wedding florist for your big day.

One thing to bear in mind is that wedding florists are in high demand, especially during peak wedding season, so you should organise finding a wedding florist at least six months before your wedding.
Finding a wedding florist
Ideally you will use a wedding florist in the area where you are holding your wedding and reception. This will be cheaper than paying delivery costs and will also ensure your wedding flowers are as fresh as they can be.
It can be well worth asking staff at your wedding venue if they have any recommendations for wedding florists. They will have seen the work of many wedding florists so can be a good source of information.
Friends who have recently married are also good people to ask. Ask them about their experiences with their wedding florist and if they would recommend them to you. They will also be able to give you some first-hand advice on what to look out for in your search for a wedding florist. If you can’t get any personal recommendations look in your Yellow Pages, local paper and in wedding magazines for some wedding florists in your area or better still choose the florists who are members of the wedding guild.
Researching wedding florists
Make appointments to see a few wedding florists. It’s best to see more than one so that you can assess what’s available and make a comparison of quotes.
You should take in some fabric from the brides’ and the bridesmaids’ dresses and some swatches to give the wedding florist an idea of the colour scheme you have in mind. It’s also a good idea to take in any ideas you have seen in magazines etc.
Think about how you would like your flowers to work with the rest of your wedding. This will help the wedding florist choose the right flowers and package for you? Do you want traditional flowers and bouquets, or would you prefer more modern, exotic arrangements? Would you like a bright array of flowers co-ordinating with your colour scheme, or would you prefer a simple, muted look?
Ask to see photographs of the wedding florist’s previous work. Look for variety in the pictures and ask to see a picture of a recent wedding. Ask the wedding florist if they have any testimonials from previous customers.
Find out if the florist that you initially meet will be the same one that does the flowers on your wedding day. If it will be another member of staff ask to meet them and to see examples of their wedding floristry.
Budgeting for a wedding florist
The services of a wedding florist need to be budgeted for just like the rest of your wedding.
Find out what’s included in the cost quoted by the wedding florists you meet. Check that delivery and set up are included and make sure there are no hidden extras.
Remember that seasonal flowers will be much cheaper than those that are out of season or specially imported. Your wedding florist will be able to advise on what flowers are in season throughout the year.
You can also economise by using some of the flowers from the ceremony at the reception. Ask the wedding florist if this is practical. If another couple is getting married before or after you, you may be able to confer on colour schemes and share flowers. Your wedding florist will be able to help organise this.
